New Frankfort, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

New Frankfort is a small place in Saline County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

History of New Frankfort

New Frankfort has an interesting past! It was first known simply as Frankfort. The community was officially mapped out, or platted, in 1858. When a town is platted, it means its streets, lots, and public areas are carefully drawn on a map.

The early settlers who came to this area had a special reason for choosing the name Frankfort. Many of them came from Frankfurt, a large and famous city in Germany. Naming their new home after their old one was a way to remember their homeland and heritage.

A post office was opened in New Frankfort in 1863. This was an important step for the community, as it allowed people to send and receive mail, connecting them to the outside world. The post office served the community for many years, until it finally closed its doors in 1907.
