Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The New Netherland Institute is a special group that helps us learn about the past. They used to be called the Friends of the New Netherland Project. This group works to translate old Dutch papers from the 1600s. These papers tell us about when the Dutch first settled in a place called New Netherland.

This important work started in 1974. The New York State Library and the Holland Society of New York began the New Netherland Project. By 2013, they had translated more than 7,000 pages of these old documents! The institute also helps the New Netherland Research Center. This center opened in 2010 at the New York State Library.

One main goal of the project is to share these old Dutch papers. They want American researchers to be able to read them. Many researchers cannot read Dutch from the 1600s. The translated documents have been used by many different experts. For example, Russell Shorto used them for his book. It is called The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America (2004).
