About the Hotel Building
The New Sherwood Hotel is a two-story building made of brick. It stands on a strong foundation of limestone. This hotel is one of the few older buildings left in New Haven that still looks much like it did when it was first built.
Hotel Design and Features
The hotel was designed with a special front. It was meant to have a two-story porch, but this porch was never actually built. However, you can still see the iron hooks on the front wall where the porch would have been.
Inside, the hotel had a unique layout.
- The owners lived in a private home at the back of the ground floor.
- There was a kitchen used to cook for both the guests and the owners.
- The hotel rooms had interesting shapes and were designed to get lots of natural sunlight.
The Bar Room
One of the most interesting parts of the hotel was its bar room. It featured a very large bar counter and a back-bar made from oak and mahogany wood. This impressive bar wasn't originally from New Haven. It came from an old saloon in Louisville. It was moved to the New Sherwood Hotel after the nearby town of Boston, Kentucky decided to become a "dry" town, meaning alcohol could not be sold there.
History of the New Sherwood Hotel
The New Sherwood Hotel was built in 1914. It replaced an earlier hotel, the Johnson Hotel/Sherwood Hotel, which sadly burned down in 1913. The new hotel was built on the exact same spot, right next to where the main road crossed the train tracks.
Built to Last
The builders learned from the past fire. They made sure the new hotel was built with strong brick and concrete. This design was meant to protect it from future fires. The hotel's style was also quite grand, more like buildings you would see in bigger cities such as Louisville or Lexington, Kentucky, rather than a small town like New Haven.
Hotel's Golden Age
The New Sherwood Hotel was most popular from when it opened in 1914 until 1932. This was during the time of the Great Depression, a period when many people faced tough economic times. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad had train tracks right by the hotel. However, train service to the station stopped in 1954.
Later Years and Restoration
By 1992, the hotel was still owned by the descendants of its original owner, the Johnson family. Six members of the Johnson family bought out the shares from other family members to take full control. The hotel was then carefully restored. This restoration helped make it a great place for visitors coming to the Kentucky Railway Museum next door.
The New Sherwood Hotel was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 26, 1992.
