The New World Symphony is a special music academy in Miami Beach, Florida. It's like a training ground for talented young musicians. They come here to get ready for exciting careers playing classical music in professional orchestras. The academy started in 1987, and since 2011, its main home has been the amazing New World Center.

A Look Back: How It Started

The Idea Behind the Music

The New World Symphony was created in 1987 by a famous conductor named Michael Tilson Thomas. He had a big dream: to help young musicians who had just finished music school. He wanted to give them extra training so they could find jobs with top orchestras around the world.

Early Support and First Concert

A businessman named Ted Arison, who founded Carnival Cruise Lines, helped make this dream come true. He gave a lot of money to get the academy started. The New World Symphony played its very first public concert on February 4, 1988, in Miami. Mr. Arison continued to support the academy, giving over $62 million before he passed away in 1999.

New Leadership for the Future

In March 2022, Michael Tilson Thomas announced he would step down as the artistic director. He had led the academy for many years. In September 2022, Stéphane Denève became the new artistic director. Michael Tilson Thomas is now the artistic director laureate, which means he still has a special role.

What Musicians Do at the Academy

The Fellowship Program

The New World Symphony offers a special program called a "fellowship." Young musicians can join this program for three years. During this time, they get many chances to perform and learn. They play concerts both in the United States and in other countries.

Designing Their Own Shows

A cool part of the program is that the fellows can create and present their own concerts. They often choose unique or rarely heard pieces of music. These shows sometimes feature unusual groups of instruments.

Learning Beyond the Stage

The training isn't just about playing music. It also helps musicians prepare for real-world challenges. They practice for auditions, learn about managing their money, and understand how to work with donors and the media. They even get chances to teach music in local schools.

Enjoying the Music: Concerts and Awards

Where and When They Play

The New World Symphony performs a full season of concerts every year. These shows run from September to May. They take place in the New World Center's concert hall, which has 756 seats.

Different Kinds of Concerts

You can hear many types of music at their concerts. They have full-orchestra shows, where everyone plays together. There are also smaller chamber music concerts, new music series, and percussion shows. They even have special concerts for families and various festivals.

Recognized for New Music

On June 29, 2011, the New World Symphony received a special award. The ASCAP gave them first place for "Adventurous Programming." This award recognized their strong dedication to playing new American music.
