A Place for Young Musicians
The New World Symphony was started in 1987 by a famous conductor named Michael Tilson Thomas. He got help from Ted Arison, who founded Carnival Cruise Lines. They both wanted to create a place where young musicians, fresh out of music school, could get special training. This training would help them find jobs in big orchestras.
The New World Symphony played its very first concert in Miami on February 4, 1988. Mr. Arison gave a lot of money to the organization over the years.
Training for Future Stars
The New World Symphony offers a special three-year program. It's like a fellowship, where young musicians get many chances to perform and learn. They perform both in the United States and in other countries.
Musicians in the program can even create and present their own concerts. These often feature unique pieces of music that are not played very often. The training also includes practice auditions, lessons on managing money, and how to work with donors and the media. They also get chances to teach music in local schools.
Concerts and Performances
The New World Symphony performs concerts from September to May each year. They play in the 756-seat concert hall at the New World Center. Their performances include:
- Full orchestra concerts
- Chamber music series (smaller groups of musicians)
- New music series (featuring modern pieces)
- Percussion concerts
- Small ensemble concerts
- A family series (great for all ages)
- Special festivals and recitals
In 2010, the orchestra went on a tour through Umbria, Italy. This trip was written about in a book called 'Feast For The Senses'.
Awards and New Leadership
On June 29, 2011, the New World Symphony Orchestra won a top award from ASCAP. They won for "Adventurous Programming" because they are very committed to playing new American music. This means they like to try new and exciting pieces.
In 2022, Michael Tilson Thomas decided to step down as the artistic director. He became the artistic director laureate, which means he still has a special role. In September 2022, Stéphane Denève became the new artistic director.
