History of the Museum
How It Started
The museum was started by John Sinclair and Dr Fred Spurdle. Their very first display opened in April 1969. A group called the Rugby Museum Society of New Zealand Incorporated was officially formed on May 14, 1970.
What You Can See
The museum was inspired by the Trophy Room at Cardiff Arms Park in Wales. Inside, you can find lots of interesting things. These include old rugby gear, uniforms, books, photos, and shiny trophies. There are also badges, video screens, and many other items that tell the story of rugby.
Important People at the Museum
Many famous rugby players have helped the museum. Former All Blacks like Sir Brian Lochore, Ian MacRae, and Sir Wilson Whineray have been presidents or patrons. As of 2025, Dr. Farah Palmer is the president. Stephen Berg is the full-time director.
Neil Monro has been the treasurer for over fifty years. He is the grandson of Charles Monro. Charles Monro is known for bringing the game of rugby union to New Zealand. Clive Akers is the committee chair. He has written many rugby books, including The New Zealand Rugby Register 1870-2015. He has also helped edit the Rugby Almanack since 1994.
New Home and Special Events
Before the Rugby World Cup 2011, the museum moved to a bigger place. It is now next to the Palmerston North Civic Centre. It's part of the Te Manawa museum, which also has art, science, and history.
The museum was part of the REAL New Zealand Festival. This festival had many cultural events during the Rugby World Cup. The museum has about 50,000 items in its collection. Some of these items are shared online through NZMuseums. This is a combined list of items from museums across New Zealand. The museum also lends out special items for different uses.
Who Runs the Museum
The museum is managed by the Rugby Museum Society of New Zealand. This group is a registered charity. It is also an Associate Member of the New Zealand Rugby Union.
