The Newark Stars: A Short Season
The Newark Stars were part of the Negro leagues. These leagues were professional baseball organizations for African American players. They existed at a time when Black players were not allowed to play in Major League Baseball. The Stars joined the Eastern Colored League for the 1926 season.
Who Were the Newark Stars?
The team's owner was Wilbur Crelin. The manager and third baseman was Andy Harris. The Stars had some well-known players. These included outfielder Charlie Mason and second baseman George Scales. Many other players on the team had played for other teams in the Eastern Colored League.
A famous baseball veteran named Sol White was also a coach for the team. He had played baseball for almost 40 years! This was his last time being part of a baseball team in uniform.
Their Home Field
The Newark Stars played their home games at Davids' Stadium. This stadium was in Newark, New Jersey. It was also the home field for another team, the Newark Bears. The Bears played in the International League. Davids' Stadium later became known as Ruppert Stadium.
A Difficult Season
The Newark Stars had a very tough season. They did not win many games. The team only managed to win one game. They lost ten games during their short time playing. Because of their struggles, the Newark Stars team did not finish the season. They disbanded, meaning they stopped playing, in the middle of 1926.
