Newmore Castle in 2008

Newmore Castle is an old castle ruin found just north of the town of Alness in the Highlands of Scotland.

Today, the castle is mostly a ruin. It used to be a three-story building, but now only one story remains. This part still has a strong, curved roof that looks a bit like the inside of a tunnel. You can also see the lower parts of a small tower that once held stairs. These stairs led to the upper floors, including what used to be a large hall on the first floor. The main entrance on the ground floor is also still there, protected by small openings called gun ports, which were used to fire weapons if needed.

The Castle's Early Story

Newmore Castle has a long history, with records mentioning it as far back as 1560. It was also used to keep important papers and documents safe for Foulis. Early on, the castle belonged to a man named Andrew Munro, 5th of Milntown. He was often known as Andrew Munro of Newmore during his father's lifetime.

A Famous Owner: George Munro

Later, in the 1600s, another part of the Munro family owned Newmore Castle. The most well-known owner was George Munro, 1st of Newmore. He was the brother of Sir Robert Munro, 3rd Baronet of Foulis, who was the leader of the Clan Munro.

George Munro was an important military leader. He commanded the forces of King Charles II after the Stuart royal family returned to power in Great Britain. When he wasn't busy with his duties for the king, George Munro would welcome visitors to the castle. He was known for offering a simple but very friendly welcome, like a soldier would.

What Happened to the Castle?

Newmore Castle stayed with George Munro's family for several generations. However, in 1763, it passed to another branch of the Munro family, the Munro of Culrain line. Over time, the castle slowly fell apart. By the 1800s, it was no longer kept in good repair and became the ruin we see today.
