About the Race
The main sponsor of the race is Admiral Insurance. They are a company based in Newport. The race has become very popular. Nearly 2,000 runners now take part each year. Other groups also help sponsor the event. These include Skechers, the South Wales Argus newspaper, and Newport City Council. The University of South Wales and Newport Live also support the race.
The Race Route
The race course is very scenic and interesting. Runners first go through an area called Pillgwenlly. They pass the amazing Newport Transporter Bridge. This bridge is a very old and special landmark.
The route then follows the River Usk riverfront. Runners enjoy pathways along the river. They also run on part of the historic Route 88 cycle path. This path goes from Caerleon to Cardiff. Sometimes, the course even crosses famous bridges in the city.
Historic Sights Along the Way
A special part of the route goes past ancient Roman ruins. These are the remains of a fortress town called Caerleon. It dates all the way back to 74 AD. Runners can see the best-preserved amphitheatre in the UK. They also pass the Roman Baths Museum and the National Roman Legion Museum. After seeing these historic sites, runners follow Caerleon Road back to the city centre. That is where the finish line is!
Sister Race: Newport Marathon
The Half Marathon usually happens every March. However, it was cancelled in 2018 due to bad weather. The Half Marathon has a sister event. This is the ABP Newport Marathon. The Marathon race started in 2018.
