A Look at the Newport Technical Institute
This interesting building is made of red bricks and has a shiny copper dome on top. It stands right by the River Usk in a place called Clarence Place, very close to Newport Bridge.
When Was it Built?
The land for the institute was bought from a very important local person called Lord Tredegar. The building itself was finished and opened its doors in September 1910.
What Was its Purpose?
The Newport Technical Institute and its School of Art grew from an older place called the Newport Mechanics Institute. These places were built to help people learn new skills, especially in technical subjects and art. It was a place where many students learned about art and design for many years.
What Happened to the Building Later?
After a long time, the School of Art moved to a new location at the University of Wales, Newport Caerleon campus. Once the art school left, the old building started to get very run down and needed a lot of repairs.
But don't worry, the story has a happy ending! In 2008, work began to fix up the building. It was carefully changed into modern homes, called luxury apartments. This big project was finished in 2012, giving the historic building a new life.
