Newry's Past: A Quick Look

Newry was never officially "platted." This means it wasn't laid out on a map with specific streets and property lines by a government or developer. Even so, people lived and worked there.

A post office opened in Newry in 1846. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. However, the post office didn't stay open for long. It closed down in 1860.

Newry was also home to one of the very first mills in Vernon Township. Mills were super important back then! They used water power to grind grain into flour or saw logs into lumber, helping the early settlers build their homes and get food.
