The Ngakawau River is a river located on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It flows mostly towards the northwest. The river eventually reaches the Tasman Sea near the town of Hector.

What Does Ngakawau Mean?

The name Ngākawau comes from the Māori language. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage explains that it means "the shags." Shags are a type of seabird often found near rivers and the coast.

Exploring the Ngakawau River Gorge

The Ngakawau River flows through a beautiful area known as the Lower Ngakawau Gorge. This gorge is a popular spot for outdoor activities.

The Charming Creek Walkway

A long time ago, a railway line called the Charming Creek Railway used to run next to the Ngakawau River. This railway was used to carry coal from mines in the area. Today, this old railway track has been turned into a walking trail called the Charming Creek Walkway. It's a great place to explore the gorge.

As you walk about 3 kilometers into the gorge, you'll see something amazing. The Mangatini Stream joins the Ngakawau River by falling over the 25-meter-tall Mangatini Falls. It's a beautiful waterfall to see!

Home to a Rare Plant

The Ngakawau River area is special because it's the only place in the world where a very rare daisy grows. This daisy is called Celmisia morganii. It lives in parts of the Upper Ngakawau Gorge. Scientists work to protect this unique plant.

Keeping the River Clean

Like many rivers near mining areas, the Ngakawau River has faced some challenges with pollution.

Understanding River Pollution

The river has been affected by something called acid mine drainage. This happens when water from mines picks up harmful substances. The river also has coal fines, which are tiny pieces of coal, from the nearby Stockton Mine.

Efforts to Improve Water Quality

People are working to make the Ngakawau River cleaner. A project called the Stockton Plateau Hydro Project is planned. It is expected to help reduce the amount of pollution in the river.

An environmental group called Ngakawau Riverwatch was formed in 2001. This group works to address the water pollution and protect the river's health. Their efforts help keep the river safe for plants and animals.
