AIATSIS N90

Ngandi was an Aboriginal language once spoken in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was used by the Ngandi people who lived near the Wilton River. This language was closely related to another language called Nunggubuyu.

The Ngandi Language

Languages are like special treasures that hold stories, history, and culture. The Ngandi language was a unique way for the Ngandi people to share their knowledge and traditions. It helped them understand their world and connect with each other.

What Happened to Ngandi?

Sadly, Ngandi is now an extinct language. This means that there are no longer any people who speak it fluently as their everyday language. The last person who spoke Ngandi fluently was Cherry Wulumirr Daniels. She passed away in 2019. When a language becomes extinct, it means a special part of a culture's voice is lost.

Keeping the Language Alive

Even though Ngandi is extinct, people are working hard to remember and revive it. In 2017, before she passed away, Cherry Wulumirr Daniels started teaching the language to younger people. She taught them at a place called Ngukurr. This was a very important effort to pass on the language to a new generation.

Ngandi on Film

To help keep the language alive, a short film was made in 2018. It was called Lil Bois. The film was written in the Ngandi language. It was directed by Cherry Daniels's nephew. This film helps show the beauty of the language and keeps its sound alive for others to hear and learn from.
