In 1869, Ngataua Omahuru was only five years old. A big battle called Te Ngutu o te Manu was happening. During this time, he was taken away from his family. This happened because of a conflict between different Māori groups and the government. He was taken to a town called Whanganui.
A New Family and Education
After this event, Ngataua Omahuru was adopted by a very important person. His new father was William Fox. William Fox later became the Premier of New Zealand. This is like being the leader of the country.
William Fox gave Ngataua Omahuru a new name: William Fox Jr. He made sure the young boy went to school in Wellington. This was a big opportunity for him. Later, he went to live and work with another lawyer named Walter Buller. This helped him learn about the law.
Becoming a Lawyer
Ngataua Omahuru worked very hard. He became New Zealand's first Māori lawyer. This was a huge achievement! He even got to work with his adoptive father, William Fox. They worked together on something called the Taranaki Land Commission. This group helped decide who owned land in the Taranaki region.
