Nggamadi facts for kids
The Nggamadi were an Indigenous Australian people. They lived in the northern part of Queensland, on the Cape York Peninsula. Like many Indigenous groups, they had a deep connection to their land and its traditions.
Understanding the Name Nggamadi
The Nggamadi people are sometimes confused with another group called the Ankamuti. However, a famous researcher named Norman Tindale believed they were a distinct group.
Different spellings of the Nggamadi name have been used over time. For example, some records call them Gamiti, Ngkamadyi, or Nggammadi. These different names often came from how other groups pronounced their name.
Nggamadi Traditional Lands
Norman Tindale estimated that the Nggamadi people's traditional lands covered about 750 square miles (1,942 square kilometers). Their territory stretched north from the Dulhunty River up to an area near Vrilya Point (also known as Cockatoo Creek). They also lived around the Jackson River and the Skardon River. These rivers and coastal areas were important parts of their homeland.
