Ngumpan is a small Aboriginal community in Western Australia. It is located about 95 kilometers (59 miles) south-east of Fitzroy Crossing. This community is part of the beautiful Kimberley region. It is also within the area managed by the Shire of Halls Creek.

Understanding Native Title in Ngumpan

Native title is a special legal right. It recognizes that Aboriginal people have traditional rights to their land and waters. These rights come from their traditional laws and customs. The Ngumpan community's land is part of a registered native title claim. This claim is known as Kurungal (WAD6217/98). It helps protect the community's connection to their ancestral lands.

How Ngumpan is Governed

The Ngumpan community manages itself through a group called the Ngumpan Aboriginal Corporation. This corporation is like a local council for the community. It was officially set up on July 1, 1981. This helps the community make its own decisions. It also allows them to manage their own affairs. This is done under a law called the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976.

Planning for Ngumpan's Future

Ngumpan has a special plan for its future development. It is called Ngumpan Layout Plan No.1. This plan helps decide where houses, roads, and other important things will be built. It follows rules from a state policy for Aboriginal settlements. The community approved this plan on July 26, 2002. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on May 4, 2004. You can see the details of this plan on the Planning Western Australia website.
