Ngunulum (also known as Cockatoo Springs) is a small Aboriginal community in Western Australia. It is located close to Kununurra in the Kimberley region. This area is part of the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley.
What is Native Title?
Native title is about the special rights and interests that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have to their traditional lands and waters. These rights come from their traditional laws and customs.
The Miriuwung Gajerrong people are the traditional owners of the land where Ngunulum is located. They signed an important agreement called the Ord Final Agreement. This agreement helps them work together with the Western Australian Government and other groups. It aims to benefit the Miriuwung Gajerrong people and the wider East Kimberley region.
How the Community is Governed
The Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corp) helps manage the community. This group acts on behalf of all Miriuwung Gajerrong native title holders. Their job is to make sure the promises made in the Ord Final Agreement are kept. This includes managing areas where the community lives.
MG Corp was officially formed in 2006. It helps the Miriuwung Gajerrong people plan how to use their traditional lands. They make important decisions about the land and its future.
Planning for the Future
Ngunulum has a special plan called Layout Plan No.1. This plan helps the community decide how their land will be used and developed. It's like a map for how the community will grow.
The community approved this plan on January 17, 2011. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it later that year, on September 29, 2011. This plan helps guide building and development in Ngunulum.
