Nia's Gymnastics Journey
Starting Out in Gymnastics
Early Competitions (2010–2012)
Nia Dennis started her gymnastics journey early. In 2010, she competed in the Covergirl Classic, where she placed second in her age group. The next year, in 2011, Nia became a Junior International Elite gymnast. This meant she was one of the top young gymnasts in the country. She competed at the Covergirl Classic but didn't make it to the National Championships that year.
In 2012, Nia was supposed to compete at the Secret U.S. Classic. However, she had to withdraw because of an injury. Even with the injury, she had already qualified for the National Championships. She did very well there, showing her skills over two days of competition.
Junior Elite Success
Shining in 2013
Nia returned to the Secret U.S. Classic in 2013, ready to compete. She finished fifth in the all-around competition. She also won a gold medal on the vault and a silver medal on the floor exercise. Nia then moved on to the National Championships in Hartford, Connecticut. She had a strong performance, finishing fourth in the all-around. She also took home a silver medal for her vault routine.
International Debut and Medals (2014)
In March 2014, Nia competed internationally for the first time at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy. She helped the U.S. team win a gold medal. Individually, she earned silver medals on the uneven bars and in the all-around.
Next, she competed at the 2014 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Canada. Here, she won another team gold medal with the U.S. team. She also earned silver medals in the all-around and on vault, just behind her teammate Bailie Key.
Later that year, Nia competed at the U.S. Classic. She finished second in the all-around, winning gold on uneven bars and silver on vault and balance beam. She ended her junior career at the National Championships. She placed second in the all-around and won gold medals on vault and floor exercise. She also earned a bronze medal on uneven bars.
Senior Elite Competitions
Stepping Up (2015)
In 2015, Nia became a senior elite gymnast. This meant she was competing at the highest level. On February 17, 2015, Nia announced her commitment to join the UCLA team for college gymnastics. At the 2015 U.S. Classic, she competed on uneven bars and balance beam, placing sixth and seventh. At the National Championships, Nia finished ninth in the all-around. After this, she was named to the U.S. Senior National Team.
Overcoming Challenges (2016)
Nia was chosen to represent the United States at the Stuttgart World Cup in 2016. However, in February, she had an injury to her Achilles tendon. This meant she couldn't compete and was replaced by another gymnast. In June, Nia competed at the National Championships, but only on uneven bars. She finished eighth on that event.
On November 16, Nia officially signed her commitment to the UCLA Bruins gymnastics team.
College Gymnastics (NCAA)
Joining the UCLA Bruins (2017–2018)
In the fall of 2017, Nia began attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She joined the UCLA gymnastics team for the 2017–2018 season. As a college gymnast, she continued to show her amazing skills and helped her team achieve great success.
