Exploring Jesolo's Location
Jesolo is found north of Venice. It sits between the towns of Eraclea and Cavallino-Treporti. The town gives its name to a large lagoon that covers about 22 square kilometers (8.5 square miles). This lagoon is part of the Adriatic Sea. It is located between two rivers, the Sile and the Piave.
The main part of Jesolo is like an island. It is surrounded by the Piave River to the east and the Sile River to the west. There is also an artificial canal called Cavetta. This canal starts in the center of Jesolo and goes towards Cortellazzo. The area around Jesolo is very flat. It has a long, sandy beach that stretches for about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles).
A Glimpse into Jesolo's Past
Long ago, in Roman times, the area where Jesolo is now was covered by a lagoon. There were several islands in this lagoon. The biggest island was called Equilium. This name meant "place of horses." People believe that the name Jesolo came from this old name. On August 1, 2023, a tornado touched down in the town.
The Story Behind the Name Jesolo
The old name for Jesolo was Equilium. This name comes from the Latin word equos or the Venetic word ekvo, both meaning "horse." It shows that the ancient people of this area were famous for raising horses.
The name Jesolo today likely came from mistakes made when writing down the old name over time. It changed from Equilo to Esulo, then Lesulo, Jexulo, Jexollo, Jesolum, and Giesolo. From the 1500s until 1930, the town was called Cavazuccherina. This name came from a canal built by a person named Alvise Zucharin.
The town officially spells its name Jesolo. The letter "J" is not common in modern Italian. It is a rare old spelling kept in this name.
How Jesolo Makes Money
Jesolo's economy mostly depends on tourism. It is a very popular beach resort. It has many places for holidays and its famous 15-kilometer (9-mile) beach, called the Lido di Jesolo.
In its most popular years, Jesolo welcomed 6.5 million tourists annually. New beach towns have opened, which has caused the number of visitors to go down a bit. In 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jesolo still had about 3.5 million overnight stays. This made it the second most popular beach destination in Italy that year.
