Niall Burke plays for the Oranmore-Maree club. He competes with them in the county intermediate championship.
Playing for Galway County
Niall first became well-known when he played for the Galway minor (under 18) hurling team in 2009. That year, he played in his first All-Ireland final. His team, Galway, played against Kilkenny. Galway won the game with a score of 2-15 to 2-11. This victory earned Niall an All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship medal.
By 2010, Niall had joined the Galway under-21 team. He played in another All-Ireland final, this time against Tipperary. However, Tipperary won that game with a score of 5-22 to 0-12.
The Galway under-21 team reached the All-Ireland final again in 2011. Niall was still a very important player in the forward line. They played against Dublin. Galway won with a score of 3-14 to 1-10. This win gave Niall an All-Ireland medal at the under-21 level.
Niall made his first appearance for the Galway senior team during the 2012 National Hurling League. Even though the team had a tough season, Niall became their main scorer. This was because their star player, Joe Canning, was not playing. Later that year, Niall made his championship debut. He then won his first Leinster medal. Galway defeated the strong team of Kilkenny, who were the reigning All-Ireland champions, with a score of 2-21 to 2-11.
Both Galway and Kilkenny met again in the All-Ireland final that year. Galway almost won, thanks to goals from Joe Canning and Niall Burke. The game ended in a 2-13 to 0-19 draw. This was the first drawn All-Ireland final in over 50 years.
On September 3, 2017, Niall Burke came into the game as a substitute for Galway in the second half. He scored two important points. Galway went on to win their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 29 years. They won against Waterford.
