What is Modern Pentathlon?

Modern pentathlon is a very exciting and challenging sport. It tests athletes in five different areas. These five parts are:

  • Fencing: Athletes use a sword called an épée. They try to score points by touching their opponent.
  • Swimming: Competitors swim 200 meters freestyle. They race against the clock.
  • Horse Riding: This part is called show jumping. Athletes ride an unfamiliar horse over obstacles. They must complete the course without knocking down poles.
  • Shooting: Athletes use a laser pistol to hit targets. They have to be very accurate and calm.
  • Running: The final part is a cross-country run. Athletes run 3,000 meters.

Why Five Sports?

This sport was created by Pierre de Coubertin. He was the founder of the modern Olympic Games. He wanted to find the best all-around athlete. He imagined a soldier who had to ride, fence, shoot, swim, and run.
