Family Connections

Nicholas Hay had a very interesting family history. He was the great-great-grandson of Robert II of Scotland, who was a King of Scotland. This means he was related to Scottish royalty through his great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth Mure.

His Marriage

Nicholas Hay married Lady Elizabeth Gordon on November 15, 1461. Lady Elizabeth was the daughter of Alexander Gordon, 1st Earl of Huntly. Interestingly, Nicholas was originally planned to marry Elizabeth's sister, Lady Margaret, but the plans changed.

After Nicholas passed away, Lady Elizabeth married again. Her second husband was John Kennedy, 2nd Lord Kennedy. When she died in 1500, she left some lands, including Cassillis and Dunure, to the Clan Kennedy.

Family Home and Legacy

The main family home for Nicholas Hay was Old Slains Castle. This was a grand castle located in Scotland.

Nicholas Hay did not have any children of his own. Because of this, when he died in 1470, his important title of Earl of Erroll went to his brother, William.
