William Hay, 3rd Earl of Erroll (born around 1449 – died January 14, 1507) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of the third Earl of Erroll and was also known as the fourth Lord Hay of Erroll.
About William Hay
William Hay was the son of William Hay, 1st Earl of Erroll and Beatrix Douglas. His great-great-grandfather was King Robert II of Scotland. This means he came from a very important family with royal connections.
Becoming an Earl
William became the Earl of Erroll in 1470. He inherited this important title after his older brother, Nicholas Hay, passed away.
Working for the King
William Hay was a trusted advisor to King James III of Scotland. He was a member of the King's Privy Council. This was a group of important people who helped the King make big decisions for the country.
He also helped make peace between Scotland and England. In 1482, he was part of a group that worked on a peace treaty. This treaty helped to end conflicts between the two countries.
Family Life
William Hay was married twice and had several children. His first wife was Lady Isabel Gordon. She was the daughter of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly and Princess Annabella of Scotland. Princess Annabella was the daughter of King James I of Scotland.
William and Isabel had four children:
- William Hay, who later became the 4th Earl of Erroll.
- Thomas Hay of Logie.
- John Hay.
- Lady Beatrix Hay.
Later, William married Lady Elizabeth Leslie. She was the daughter of George Leslie, 1st Earl of Rothes.
William and Elizabeth had three children:
- John II Hay.
- William Hay of Lesk.
- Lady Elizabeth Hay.
