William Hay, 4th Earl of Erroll (born in 1470, died on September 9, 1513) was an important Scottish nobleman and soldier. Before he became Earl of Erroll in 1507, he was known as Lord Hay. He held a very important position in Scotland as the Lord High Constable of Scotland, which meant he was a top military leader. Sadly, he lost his life fighting in a famous battle called the Battle of Flodden.
William Hay's Life and Role
William Hay was the son of William Hay, 3rd Earl of Erroll. His family had strong connections to Scottish royalty. His grandfather, William Hay, 1st Earl of Erroll, was a great-great-grandson of King Robert II of Scotland. Also, William Hay's mother's father was James I of Scotland. This meant William had royal blood from both sides of his family!
He served as the Lord High Constable of Scotland. This was a very old and important job. The Lord High Constable was the supreme officer of the Scottish army, second only to the king himself. It was a title that was passed down through his family.
William Hay was killed on September 9, 1513, during the Battle of Flodden. This battle took place near Branxton, Northumberland, in England. It was a major defeat for Scotland. William died alongside his younger brother Thomas. Many other important Scottish leaders, including King James IV of Scotland, also died in this battle.
William's Family Life
William Hay married Christian Lyon. She was the daughter of John Lyon, 3rd Lord Glamis. William and Christian had two children:
- William Hay, 5th Earl of Erroll (born around c. 1495 in Errol, Scotland, and died on July 28, 1522, in Edinburgh)
- Lady Isabel Hay
Later, William married a second time to Margaret Kinloch of Cruvie. She was the widow of Sir James Sandilands.
