William Hay, 5th Earl of Erroll (born around 1495 – died 28 July 1522) was an important Scottish nobleman and a leader in the government. He held the title of Earl of Erroll, which meant he was a high-ranking member of the Scottish nobility.
Early Life and Family
William Hay was the son of William Hay, 4th Earl of Erroll and Christian Lyon. His family was very important in Scotland. He was even related to Scottish kings, including Robert II of Scotland and James I of Scotland. This connection meant his family had a long history and a lot of influence.
Becoming an Earl
William became the Earl of Erroll on October 20, 1513, when he was about 18 years old. This was a big responsibility for someone so young. As the Earl, he also took on the role of Lord High Constable of Scotland. This was a very old and important job. The Lord High Constable was in charge of keeping order and protecting the king's court.
A Young Statesman
Because of his important role as Lord High Constable, William Hay was chosen for special missions. In 1515, he was sent to France as a "commissioner." This means he was like an official representative for Scotland. The next year, in 1516, he went to England for a similar purpose. These trips showed that even at a young age, he was trusted with important tasks in Scottish politics.
Family Life and Legacy
William Hay married Elizabeth Ruthven. She was the youngest daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Lord Ruthven. William and Elizabeth had one son together, named William Hay, 6th Earl of Erroll.
William Hay died on July 28, 1522. He was only 26 or 27 years old. His son, William, later became the 6th Earl of Erroll. However, his son also died young. After that, the title of Earl of Erroll eventually passed to George Hay, who was a grandson of the 3rd Earl of Erroll.
