William Hay, 6th Earl of Erroll (1521 – 11 April 1541) was an important Scottish noble. He was known as Lord Hay until he was one year old.
Early Life and Family
William Hay was born in 1521 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was William Hay, 5th Earl of Erroll.
William had a special connection to the royal family. He was related to two Scottish kings: Robert II of Scotland and James I of Scotland. This made his family very important in Scotland.
Becoming an Earl
William inherited his titles in 1522 when he was just one year old. This meant he became the 6th Earl of Erroll and the 10th Lord High Constable of Scotland. The Lord High Constable was a very old and important position in Scotland. It involved leading the king's army and keeping order.
Because William died before he turned 21, the land and title of the Barony of Errol were held by the king. This was a common rule for young nobles who inherited titles.
Marriage and Children
William Hay married Lady Helen Stewart. Her name sometimes appears as "Elenor" or "Helenor." Lady Helen was the oldest daughter of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox.
William and Helen had one daughter together:
- Lady Jean Hay (born in 1540). She later married Andrew Hay, 8th Earl of Erroll.
Later Life and Legacy
William Hay, 6th Earl of Erroll, passed away on 11 April 1541 in Edinburgh. He was only 19 or 20 years old.
After William's death, his wife Helen remarried. She married John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland.
Six months after William's death, his cousin, George Hay, became the next Earl of Erroll. George was the grandson of William Hay, 3rd Earl of Erroll.
