Andrew Hay, 8th Earl of Erroll (born around 1531 – died 8 October 1585), was an important Scottish nobleman and politician. He held the special role of Lord High Constable of Scotland, which was a very old and powerful position in the country.

Andrew Hay's Life

Andrew Hay was the son of George Hay, 7th Earl of Erroll. His mother was Margaret Robertson. His father became the Earl of Erroll after his uncle, William Hay, 6th Earl of Erroll, passed away. William had only a baby daughter, Jean Hay.

In Scotland, noble titles like "Earl" can sometimes pass down through the female side of a family. This means Jean could have become the Countess of Erroll. However, the King decided that Andrew's father, George, would inherit the title instead. This came with a condition: George had to pay money to William's widow. Also, one of George's sons had to marry Jean Hay.

Andrew Hay passed away in October 1585.

Family and Marriages

Andrew Hay married his cousin, Lady Jean Hay, around June 1552. She was the daughter of the 6th Earl of Erroll. They had several children together.

Lady Jean Hay passed away in August 1570. Andrew Hay married again in 1581 to Agnes Sinclair. She was the daughter of George Sinclair, 4th Earl of Caithness. They had three children:

Andrew Hay also had a daughter named Agnes from outside his marriages. She married Patrick Bruce.

His second wife, Lady Agnes, lived longer than Andrew.
