Nicholas I de Soules facts for kids
Nicholas de Soules was an important noble from the Scottish Borders in the 1200s. He was known as the Lord of Liddesdale and also held the special job of Butler of Scotland.
Nicholas's Life and Important Roles
Nicholas de Soules took over from his father, Fulk de Soules, when his father passed away in 1227. Nicholas became the new Lord of Liddesdale. He also became the Butler of Scotland, which was a very important position.
In 1237, Nicholas was made the sheriff of Roxburgh. A sheriff was like a main law enforcer and manager for a certain area.
Around the early 1240s, Nicholas started building a strong castle called Hermitage Castle in Liddesdale. This castle was in a key location.
Building Hermitage Castle made Henry III of England quite upset. King Henry thought the new castle was a threat to the northern part of England. Because of this, he led his army towards Scotland. To avoid a big war, Scotland and England signed an agreement called the Treaty of Newcastle in 1244. This treaty helped keep peace between the two countries.
Nicholas de Soules passed away in 1264 in a place called Rouen, which is in Normandy.
Nicholas's Family
Nicholas de Soules married a woman named Annora. She was the daughter of John de Normanville. Nicholas and Annora had three sons:
- William I de Soules of Liddesdale (died around 1292). He married Ermengarde Durward and had children.
- John de Soules of Old Roxburgh (died 1310). He married Margaret de Ardross and had children.
- Thomas de Soules of Stamfordham (died around 1304). He married Alicia de Mulcastre.
