Nicholas Jowin Sherman, known as Nick Sherman, is an Oji-Cree singer and songwriter. He comes from Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Early Life and Musical Roots

Nick Sherman was born in 1987. He grew up in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. As a young person, he was part of the local punk music scene. This experience helped shape his own music style.

Nick's music is also inspired by trips to North Caribou Lake First Nation. His grandfather would take him there for trapping. His grandfather also played guitar and sang, which influenced Nick greatly. Before becoming a full-time musician, Nick studied broadcasting. He then worked at CBC Radio in Thunder Bay.

Music Career Highlights

Nick Sherman has been featured on CBC Thunder Bay. He performed live for their 40th anniversary. He also took part in CBC's Unreserved Indigenous Music Mentorship Program. This program helps new Indigenous musicians.

In 2012, Nick released his first album, Drag Your Words Through. A song called "Winterdark" came out before the album. The Ontario Arts Council helped fund this album.

In 2015, Nick released "Ghost Town." This song was from his second album, Knives & Wildrice. A podcast talked about how this album was made. Knives & Wildrice won an award in 2017. It was named the best folk album at the Indigenous Music Awards.

Nick's third album, Made Of, came out in 2019. Because of COVID-19, he could not go on tour.

In 2020, he released a single called "Unbreakable." It came with a music video. The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network helped create this video. Nick's song “Find My Way” was also used in a play. The play was called The Mush Hole.

Personal Life

Nick Sherman is married to Candace Twance. She is an artist who is Ukrainian and Ojibwa. Nick and Candace have two children together.
