Nico's Boxing Journey
Before becoming a professional boxer in 2021, Nico Ali Walsh trained for several months. He worked with a well-known boxing coach named Abel Sanchez in California. Nico had a "limited" amateur boxing career, which means he had about 30 fights before turning pro.
Starting as a Pro Boxer
In early 2021, Nico decided to become a professional boxer. He started working with SugarHill Steward, who is also the trainer for famous boxer Tyson Fury. Nico is promoted by Bob Arum's company, Top Rank. This company also promoted 27 of his grandfather's fights.
First Professional Fights
Nico Ali Walsh had his first professional fight on August 14, 2021. He fought against Jordan Weeks and won by a technical knockout in the first round. A technical knockout (TKO) happens when the referee stops the fight because one boxer can't safely continue.
His second fight was on October 23, 2021, against James Westley II. Nico won this fight by a technical knockout in the third round. On December 11, 2021, he fought Reyes Sanchez. Nico won this match by a majority decision. This means most of the judges thought he won, but one judge scored the fight as a draw.
More Wins in 2022
Nico continued his winning streak in 2022. On January 29, he defeated Jeremiah Yeager with a second-round technical knockout. Then, on April 30, he won against Alejandro Ibarra with a first-round knockout. A knockout (KO) means a boxer is hit so hard they can't get up within a count of ten.
Nico wanted to stay very active in boxing. He fought Reyes Sanchez again on August 20, 2022. Nico felt he didn't perform his best in their first fight. This time, he knocked out Reyes Sanchez in the second round.
Recent Fights
Nico Ali Walsh has continued to fight and build his record. On August 16, 2023, he faced Sona Akale and suffered his first professional loss by majority decision. However, he later got his revenge! On June 29, 2024, he fought Sona Akale again and won by unanimous decision. This means all the judges agreed he won the fight.
Nico's Personal Life
Nico Ali Walsh is a Muslim. He is the grandson of the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. His aunt is also a famous boxer, Laila Ali.
Nico saw how tough boxing was for both his grandfather and his aunt. He thought a lot about whether he should follow in their footsteps. In the end, it was his grandfather's love for the sport that encouraged Nico to become a boxer himself.
