The Nicola Valley Museum and Archives is a special place in Merritt, British Columbia. It helps us learn about the past of the Nicola Valley. This museum collects and keeps old items and important papers. It is like a treasure chest of history for the area.
A group called the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives Association built and runs this museum. They first met on May 26, 1976, to start the association. They officially became a society on September 23, 1976. Before finding their permanent home, the group used a few temporary spots. They moved into their current building in 1980 or 1981. The museum is about 4,000 square feet (372 square meters) in size. It shares its building with a Senior Citizens Recreation Centre. You can find it in downtown Merritt at 1675 Tutill Court. It is easy to get to from Coldwater Avenue or the Railyard Mall nearby.

What's Inside: The Collection
The museum gathers all sorts of information and old items from the entire Nicola Valley. Imagine finding old tools, clothes, or photos that tell stories from long ago! The archives part of the museum has many historical papers. These include local newspapers from the early 1900s. They also have more than 4,000 old photographs. These pictures show what life was like many years ago. The association has been making a "Historical Quarterly" magazine since December 1977. This magazine shares new historical findings.
Books and Publications
Members of the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives Association also helped write a book. The book is called "Merritt & the Nicola Valley: An Illustrated History". It tells the story of Merritt and the Nicola Valley with pictures. The current president of the association is Murphy Shewchuk.
