Nicoline's Photography Journey

Nicoline Marie Elise Weywadt was born on February 5, 1848, in a place called Djúpivogur. She was the second oldest of 14 children! Her father, Niels Peter Emil Weywadt, was a director for a company, and her mother was Sophie Brochdorf. In 1880, Nicoline's family moved into the Teigarhorn house that her father had built.

Studying Photography

Nicoline went to Copenhagen to study photography. She also studied mineralogy, which is the study of minerals. She finished her studies in 1872. This made her the very first Icelandic woman to become a master photographer! When she returned to Iceland, she opened her own photography studio in Djúpivogur. It was the first one in all of eastern Iceland.

Running the Studio

After her father passed away in 1883, Nicoline took over the Teigarhorn property. She added a special photography workshop there. Nicoline worked as a photographer for about 30 years. She even taught her niece, Hansína Regína Björnsdóttir, how to be her assistant. Hansina later went to Copenhagen to study photography too, graduating in 1902. In 1888, Nicoline went back to Copenhagen to learn about a new way of taking pictures called dry-plate photography. Around 1903, she let Hansina take charge of the studio.
