The Nidderdale Museum is a cool place to learn about local history. It's in the market town of Pateley Bridge. This town is in Nidderdale, which is a beautiful area in the Yorkshire Dales in North Yorkshire, England.

The museum is special because it's located in an old building that used to be a workhouse. It's usually open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., between Easter (or April 1st) and October 31st. During the winter, from November to March, it's open only on Saturdays and Sundays at the same times. The museum is closed on Mondays. Adults pay a small fee to get in, but kids under 16 can visit for free if they are with an adult.

Did you know the museum is run entirely by volunteers? These amazing people are part of the Nidderdale Museum Society, which has about 200 members. They have a special committee and a group of trustees who help manage everything.

What You Can See at the Museum

The museum shows what life was like in the countryside. It has 11 different rooms, each with a special theme. You can explore sections about farming, local jobs, religion, how people traveled, and even old clothes.

Some rooms are set up to look like they did a long time ago. You can see a Victorian schoolroom, a cobbler's (shoe repairer's) workshop, and even a re-created tunnel from a lead mine. There's also a cozy Victorian living room, an old-fashioned general store, a 1930s hairdresser's shop, and a kitchen from the past.

Other displays show off historic costumes, old farming tools, and vehicles that people used for transport. The museum also has a library. It's full of books about Nidderdale's history and local life. This is a great place for anyone wanting to research their family history or learn more about the area.

How the Museum Started

The Nidderdale Museum opened in 1975. It was started by a group of local people who loved history. Some of them had been in a history class that wrote a book called A History of Nidderdale, which first came out in 1967. They asked Bernard Jennings, who edited the book, to be one of the first trustees for the museum.

Harrogate Borough Council helped by giving the museum a home. They used the empty offices of the Ripon and Pateley Bridge Rural District Council. This building was originally built as a workhouse way back in 1863.

The museum has even won awards! In 1990, it won the National Heritage Museum of the Year Award. This award was for "The Museum which does the Most with the Least," which means they did amazing things with limited resources. More recently, in 2017, the volunteers at Nidderdale Museum received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. This is a very special award that honors groups of volunteers in the United Kingdom.
