Nihal Naj Ali Al-Awlaqi (born in 1977) is a lawyer and politician from Yemen. She is known for her work in law and for helping to shape her country's future.

From 2016 to 2020, she served as Yemen's Minister of Legal Affairs. This role made her the top lawyer for the Yemeni government. For her dedication to justice and women's rights, she received the International Women of Courage Award in 2016.

Early Life and Education

Nihal Al-Awlaqi was born in the Shabwah Governorate region of Yemen. She was a dedicated student and traveled to Morocco to study at the Mohammed V University. There, she earned three degrees in law: a bachelor's, a master's, and a doctorate.

Besides her native Arabic, Al-Awlaqi is also fluent in English and French. This skill helped her work with people from different countries.

Career in Law and Politics

After finishing her education, Al-Awlaqi returned to Yemen. She became an assistant professor of law at the University of Aden. At the university, she focused on teaching and researching the rights and status of women in her country.

Helping to Build a New Yemen

Between 2013 and 2014, Al-Awlaqi took on a very important role. She became a member of the National Dialogue Conference. This was a large meeting where leaders from all over Yemen came together to plan the country's future.

Her work was so impressive that in 2014, she was chosen for the constitution drafting committee. A constitution is the most important set of laws for a country. Al-Awlaqi was even elected as the deputy chairperson of this committee, showing how much her colleagues respected her legal knowledge.

Serving as a Government Minister

In January 2016, Al-Awlaqi was appointed as the Minister of Legal Affairs for Yemen by President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi. At 39 years old, she took on the major responsibility of advising the government on all legal matters.

She held this important position for nearly five years, until December 17, 2020. Her work as a minister and her efforts to create a fair legal system for Yemen have made her a respected figure both in her country and around the world.
