Niko Grafenauer (born December 5, 1940) is a famous writer from Slovenia. He is known for many things, like writing poems, essays, and even translating books. He also studies the history of literature and works as an editor.

Niko Grafenauer's Early Life
Niko Grafenauer was born in Ljubljana, which is now the capital of Slovenia. At that time, it was part of a country called the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. His family was not rich. Sadly, both of his parents passed away when he was very young, in his first year of life.
Growing Up in Velike Lašče
Niko spent his childhood with his older sister in a small town called Velike Lašče. He went to high school in a town nearby, Cerknica.
University Studies
After high school, he went to the University of Ljubljana. There, he studied the history of literature. He finished his studies in 1969. His teacher was a well-known expert named Dušan Pirjevec.
Writing Career and Famous Works
Niko Grafenauer started writing and publishing his poems when he was still quite young, back in the 1950s. His early poems often appeared in a literary magazine called Sodobnost.
Founding Nova revija
In 1982, he helped start a new magazine called Nova revija. This magazine was important because it offered different ideas and views from the government at the time. Later, in the 1990s and early 2000s, he became the main editor of this magazine.
Writing for Children
Grafenauer first became very famous for his children's books. His most well-known collection is called Pedenjped. This book is about a boy who is a bit naughty and stubborn. But he is also very independent and full of creative ideas!
Deeper Poetry for Adults
Later in his career, Niko Grafenauer started writing more thoughtful and reflective poetry for adults. He was influenced by big ideas from philosophy. Even so, his many children's books are still considered some of the best in Slovenian literature written after World War II.

Niko Grafenauer still lives in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He is an active member of several groups that work to improve society. One of these groups is called the Rally for the Republic. He is also a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which is a very respected group of smart people in Slovenia.
