Nikolay Zheludev started his science journey at Moscow State University. There, he earned his first degrees and later his PhD. In 1991, he moved to the United Kingdom. He joined the University of Southampton, which is a top place for light research. By 2007, he became a director there. He led the Centre for Photonic Metamaterials. He was also a deputy director at the Optoelectronics Research Centre. This is the biggest group in the UK studying light.

He also held a high position at the International Atomic Energy Agency. Nikolay's mother, Galina Zheludeva, was a professor at Moscow State University. His sister, Svetlana Zheludeva, is also a professor. His brother, Andrey, is a professor in Switzerland. Nikolay is married to Tanya Nousinova. She is a linguist, which means she studies languages. They have two sons, Ilya and Ivan.
