Nikos Gounaris (pronounced Nee-kos Goo-nah-rees) was a very popular Greek singer in the 1950s. He was born in Zagora, Greece, in 1915. He became famous for his beautiful tenor voice and was often called Mr. Greece because so many people loved his music.
About Nikos Gounaris
Nikos Gounaris started playing the mandolin when he was only four years old. He later studied music at the Conservatory of Music in Athens, Greece.
He was a leading singer of a type of Greek music called elafró tragoudi, which means "light song." This style was very popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Nikos Gounaris was one of the most important Greek musicians and composers of his time. He was especially loved by the Greek community in America.
Many of his performances took place at Greek resorts in the Catskills, a mountain area in upstate New York. He often sang about the sad parts of love and feelings of heartbreak.
Nikos Gounaris wrote about 400 songs during his career. Some of his most famous songs include "Ena vradi pou 'vrehe," "Glikia mou matia agapimena," and "Omorfi Athina." In the 1960s, he also performed with a group called the Trio Bel Canto.
Nikos Gounaris passed away on May 5, 1965, in Athens.
