Nilamber Dev Sharma (born October 6, 1931 – died June 23, 2020) was a famous Indian scholar and writer. He wrote in both the Dogri and English languages. He is most known for his book, An Introduction to Modern Dogri Literature. This was the first book in English about Dogri literature. The Government of India gave him a special award called the Padma Shri in 2011. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in India.

About Nilamber Dev Sharma
Nilamber Dev Sharma was born on October 6, 1931, in Jammu, British India. His father, Madan Mohan Shastri, was a Sanskrit scholar and a well-known astrologer. An astrologer is someone who studies the positions of stars and planets. They believe these positions can affect people's lives.
His Education and Early Career
Nilamber Dev Sharma studied English literature at the Government Gandhi Memorial College in Jammu. He then earned a master's degree from Hindu College in New Delhi. After finishing his studies, he started working as an English lecturer in Kairana, Uttar Pradesh. A lecturer is a teacher at a college or university. He also earned an honors degree from the University of Leeds in the UK.
After a short time in Kairana, Sharma returned to his old college, the Government Gandhi Memorial College, in 1953. This college was his alma mater, which means the school he graduated from.
Working for Culture and Language
In 1961, Nilamber Dev Sharma joined the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. He started as a deputy secretary and later became the secretary. This Academy works to promote art, culture, and languages in Jammu and Kashmir.
He played a big role when the Sahitya Academy officially recognized Dogri in 1969. The Sahitya Academy is India's national academy of letters. Sharma was the first convenor of the Dogri Advisory Board. A convenor helps organize and lead a group.
In 1972, Sharma left the Academy and tried working in politics. However, he did not stay in politics for very long.
His Other Roles and Writings
Nilamber Dev Sharma also served as the director of the Amar Mahal Museum and Library. He was also the president of an organization called Dogri Sanstha. This group works to promote the Dogri language.
He wrote many books, including:
