How the Center Started
The idea for the center began in 1991 when the organization was officially formed. Later, in 2003, a group called the Maui Sons and Daughters of Nisei veterans worked hard. They made plans and did research for building the center. Their vision was to create a place with a preschool, a senior daycare, and a research area.
What the Center Offers
Kansha Preschool: Learning and Sharing
The center has a preschool called Kansha Preschool. It can welcome up to 16 young children. A special part of this preschool is that the children spend time every day with older adults. They share a building with the adult daycare center. This helps different generations connect and learn from each other.
Adult Daycare: A Place for Seniors
The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center also hosts a branch of the Maui Adult Day Care Centers. This part is called the Oceanview branch. It provides care and activities for older adults during the day.
Education Center: History and Learning
Construction for the education center began on June 29, 2009. It officially opened its doors in 2013. This part of the center has a classroom and a pavilion. It also has an archive. This archive keeps important items like stories from veterans. It also holds photographs, documents, and personal scrapbooks. The education center has two floors, each about 2,100 square feet.
