The Noah Cooke House is a really old and special house in Keene, New Hampshire. It was built way back in 1791! This house is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Keene. It's a great example of how houses looked a long time ago. What's super cool is that this house used to be on Main Street, but it was carefully moved to its current spot in the countryside in 1973. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2002. This means it's officially recognized as a historic treasure!

About the Noah Cooke House

The Noah Cooke House is located in a quiet, wooded area of western Keene. You can find it on the north side of Daniels Hill Road. It's a large house, about two and a half stories tall. It's made of wood and has a classic sloped roof.

What Does It Look Like?

This house has a big chimney right in the middle. Its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards. The front of the house has five windows and a door, all lined up nicely. The main door has simple decorations around it. Above the door, there's a small window and a decorative top piece.

Inside, the house still has many original features from when it was built. You can see fancy wooden panels around the fireplaces. There's also special plaster on the lower part of the walls. A beautiful winding staircase leads up from the front entrance.

A House on the Move!

The Noah Cooke House was built in 1791. However, part of the house, an attached section, seems even older, possibly from around 1770. The house was first built on Main Street in Keene. It was built for Noah Cooke, who was an important person in town. He worked as a lawyer and was the town clerk. He even helped start Keene's first fire company!

In 1906, a well-known local businessman named Horatio Colony bought the house. It stayed in his family until 1966. By 1973, the house was in danger of being torn down. To save it, the house was carefully moved to its current location in October 1973. Imagine moving an entire house!
