Noel Tierney (born February 2, 1942 – died November 10, 2024) was a famous Irish Gaelic football player. He played for two local clubs, Garrymore and Milltown. He was also a very important player for the Galway senior football team, representing his home county.

Playing Career
Noel Tierney started his Gaelic football journey with the Garrymore club. Later, he moved to the Milltown club. He quickly found success there. In 1960, he won a minor title, which is for younger players. The very next year, in 1961, he won a Galway JFC medal.
Playing for Galway
Noel also played for his county, Galway. He spent two years on the minor team. During this time, he won two Connacht SFC medals in a row. In 1960, his minor team won the All-Ireland minor final against Cork.
After playing for the minor team, Noel joined the senior team. He won his first of four Connacht SFC medals in a row in 1963. He also played in four All-Ireland finals in a row. His team won the All-Ireland Championship in 1964, 1965, and 1966. This was a huge achievement!
In 1965, he also won a National League medal. Noel finished his county career in 1968, winning his fifth Connacht SFC medal.
Playing for Connacht
Noel's great skills also earned him a spot on the Connacht team. This team is made up of the best players from the Connacht province. He won two Railway Cup medals with Connacht. In 1969, he was even the captain of the team that won the Railway Cup.
Noel stopped playing for his county when he was 27. However, he continued to play for his club, Milltown. In 1971, he helped his club win a Galway SFC medal.
Awards and Recognition
Noel Tierney's amazing performances for Galway were noticed. He received two Cú Chulainn Awards in a row, in 1963 and 1964. These awards recognized him as one of the best players. In 1964, he was also named Footballer of the Year.
In 1993, Noel was honored by being added to the Galway Football Hall of Fame. This means he was recognized as one of the greatest players in Galway's history. In 1999, he received an even bigger honor. He was chosen as the full-back on the Galway Football Team of the Millennium. This team included the best Galway players from the last 1000 years!
Later Life and Death
Noel Tierney passed away on November 10, 2024, at the age of 82. He had been unwell for some time.
