Nonchalanta is a ghost town located in Ness County, Kansas, United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, leaving behind empty buildings. Nonchalanta is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Ness City.

What is the History of Nonchalanta?

Like many other ghost towns in Kansas, Nonchalanta grew quickly and then disappeared just as fast. The town was officially planned and named in 1885.

How Did Nonchalanta Begin?

Settlers came to Nonchalanta in covered wagons. They were promised free land and that a railroad would soon pass through the town. This promise made many people excited to move there.

What Buildings Were in Nonchalanta?

Soon, a church and a hotel were built. Other businesses also opened their doors. Work even started on a bank. In 1887, a nearby post office changed its name to Nonchalanta. By 1888, a school was finished, so children could attend classes.

Why Did Nonchalanta Become a Ghost Town?

By 1890, many businesses started to leave Nonchalanta. This happened because the planned railroad was canceled. Without the railroad, the town did not have a good way to connect with other places. People began to move away. The post office, which was an important part of the town, officially closed in 1930. This marked the end of Nonchalanta as an active community.
