Norfolk, Missouri facts for kids
Norfolk was once a small town in Mississippi County, located in the U.S. state of Missouri. Today, it is known as an extinct town, which means it no longer exists as a populated place.
What Was Norfolk?
Norfolk was officially planned and mapped out in 1836. This process is called being platted. It's thought that the town was named after Norfolk, Virginia, a much larger city.
A Short-Lived Post Office
For a short time, Norfolk even had its own post office. It opened in 1849, allowing residents to send and receive mail. However, the post office only stayed open for a few years, closing down in 1855. This short period of operation suggests that the town itself might not have grown very large or lasted very long.
