Norman Loftis (born in 1943) is an American writer and filmmaker. His work often explores the experiences of African Americans, including his own childhood in the South Side of Chicago.

About Norman Loftis's Work

Norman Loftis was born in Chicago. He went to Fisk University and later earned advanced degrees from Columbia University.

His first book of poems, Exiles and Voyages, was published in 1970. He dedicated this book to his friend, the famous poet W.H. Auden.

Another one of his books, Black Anima, came out in 1973. This book tells a story about a journey to find black identity. The story travels from New York City to Europe and even to ancient Egypt.

His Films

Norman Loftis has also made movies. One of his films is called Small Time (1990). This movie looks at the lives of young Black men facing difficult situations.

Another film he made is Messenger (1994). This movie is about a person who delivers messages by bicycle in New York City. Many people see Messenger as a new version of an older Italian film called Bicycle Thieves by Vittorio De Sica.
