Norman Yakeleya is a Canadian politician born on March 13, 1959. He is from the Northwest Territories in Canada. He is known for serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Sahtu region.
Norman Yakeleya's Political Journey
Norman Yakeleya started his political career in his local community. From 1987 to 1990, he was a city councillor for the Yellowknife City Council. This means he helped make decisions for the city of Yellowknife.
After that, he became the Chief of the Tulita Dene Band. He also served as the Chairman of the Sahtu Tribal Council. These roles involved leading and representing Indigenous communities in the Sahtu region.
Becoming an MLA
In 2003, Norman Yakeleya was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature. This is like being a member of parliament for the Northwest Territories. He won against four other people to get this job.
He was re-elected for his second term in 2007. This time, he won by "acclamation," which means no one else ran against him. He continued to serve as an MLA until 2015.
