The North Conway 5 and 10 Cent Store is a very old and special shop located at 2683 Main Street in North Conway, New Hampshire. It's a type of general store or "dime store" where you could buy many different things for low prices. This building was first built around 1840, but it got a big makeover in 1900.

It's one of the few old dime stores still standing in New Hampshire. The store also has a unique "false front" design, which makes it look taller and more impressive. Because of its history and special look, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Discovering the Store's Look

The North Conway 5 and 10 Cent Store stands out on the east side of Main Street in downtown North Conway. It's right where Main Street meets Kearsarge Street. The building is made of wood and has two and a half stories.

Its roof is hidden by a special "false front" that makes the building look like it has three full stories. This style was popular in "boom towns" in the American West. The front of the store has large plate glass windows. These windows are on either side of the main entrance, which is set back a bit. There's also another entrance on the far right side.

On the second floor, you'll see three windows that are not perfectly lined up. A single window is in the middle of the third floor. Inside, the store still looks much like it did around 1900. It has a cool tin ceiling and plaster walls. The lower part of the walls has vertical wooden panels. You can also see old glass and wood display counters and maple wood floors.

At the back of the store, there's an added section called an "ell." This part has linoleum floors and special sound-absorbing panels on the walls. It also has a lower ceiling.

A Glimpse into the Store's Past

The North Conway 5 and 10 Cent Store was likely built around 1840. However, its current appearance comes from a big renovation that happened around 1900. The section at the back of the store was added later, around 1940.

The "false front" design on this building is the only one of its kind in North Conway. This store has been open and serving customers continuously since 1939. It has had several different owners over the years. When it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, it was one of only two known 5 and 10 cent stores still operating in New Hampshire.
