The Story of North Madison
Early Days and Growth
North Madison was officially planned and mapped out in 1846. This process, called platting, means someone drew up a detailed map showing where streets, lots, and public areas would be. It helped the area grow in an organized way.
Just two years later, in 1848, a post office opened in North Madison. This was an important step, as it made it easier for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1957.
Joining the City
In 1952, North Madison became an official part of the larger city of Madison. This process is called annexation. When an area is annexed, it means it joins a nearby city. This was a big help for North Madison because it meant the city of Madison could provide important services. These services included things like water, sewer systems, and police protection for the homes and new businesses in the area.
