What Was the North Point Light?
The first North Point Light was built in the early 1860s. It used a large kerosene lamp and a special reflector to shine its light. This light helped sailors find their way around the waters near Moreton Island.
A New Lighthouse in 1899
In 1899, the original lighthouse was replaced. The new structure was built using a strong hardwood frame. It was covered with corrugated iron, which is a type of metal sheeting often used for roofs and walls.
This lighthouse was one of eight similar ones built in Queensland during that time. They all shared a similar design, using hardwood frames and corrugated iron. Some other lighthouses built this way included Grassy Hill Light and Old Caloundra Light.
How the Light Shone
Even after the new lighthouse was built, some records from 1909 still described it as a square wooden room for the light. It had a special lens system called a "fixed sixth order dioptric apparatus." This system helped to focus the light. The light shone as a white beam, and it could be seen for about 7 nautical miles, which is about 13 kilometers (8 miles).
The Lighthouse's Final Years
In 1912, the North Point Light became controlled by the Commonwealth government. Later, the lighthouse was taken down. Today, if you look at lists of lighthouses, you won't find the North Point Light listed anymore. It no longer stands on Moreton Island.
