The North Slope is a neighborhood in the northern part of Tacoma, Washington. It is a special area known for its history and unique homes.

What is the North Slope Historic District?

The North Slope is a neighborhood in Tacoma, Washington. It is generally located south of Yakima Hill. People usually think of it as being between North I Street, Division Avenue, and North Steele Street.

Why is it called the North Slope?

This area is called the North Slope because the land gently slopes downwards. Also, the streets here are angled differently from other streets in North Tacoma. This gives the neighborhood a unique feel.

What kind of homes are in the district?

The North Slope has many different kinds of homes. You can find large houses, apartment buildings, and smaller bungalows. The North Slope Historic District is a special area within this neighborhood. It is shaped like a trapezoid. Its borders are North I Street, Division Avenue, North Steele Street, and North Grant Avenue.

This district is very large. It has 1,285 historic buildings and places. This makes it one of the biggest historic districts in Washington state.

What architectural styles can you find?

The North Slope was mainly built as a place for people to live. Because of this, it has many different styles of architecture. You can see homes built in the Stick Style, Queen Anne, and Craftsman styles. There are also American Foursquare, Tudor Revival, and Mission Revival buildings.

Besides homes, you will find many churches and apartment buildings. There are also a few small business areas. The neighborhood grew over time. So, it's common to see buildings next to each other that were built many years apart.

When were most homes built?

Most of the homes in the North Slope Historic District were built during three main periods. These were from 1888 to 1893, 1902 to 1915, and 1919 to 1929. Nearly 80 percent of all the homes were built before 1930.

North Slope Historic District Park

There is a small park located at the corner of North K and North 8th Streets. This park was a project involving the North Slope Historic District, the City of Tacoma, and the North End Council.

How was the park created?

Residents of the North Slope first suggested the idea for a park in the early 1990s. At first, the North Slope Historic District did not have enough money to start the project. However, local representatives eventually got funding. This money came from the Thea Foss Bond Issue, which was given to each neighborhood council.

It took many years to transfer the land for the park. The property needed to be moved from Tacoma Power to the City of Tacoma.

What does the park offer?

Metro Parks Tacoma helped design and develop the park. Even though Metro Parks developed it, the City of Tacoma owns the land. The small park has a wooden play structure for younger children. It also has seating areas and a ramp for easy access. There are also many plants. The design and equipment in the park were approved by the Landmarks Commission.

Metro Parks Tacoma is in charge of maintaining the park. They make sure it stays clean and safe.

Who is the park dedicated to?

The park is dedicated to Valerie Sivinski. She was a former Tacoma Historic Preservation Officer. She helped guide the creation of the North Slope Historic District.
