Why This Building Is Important
This building is very special because it's a rare factory that is still mostly the same as it was in 1919. Most of its original parts, like its walls and structure, have not been changed. Only a few windows were updated over time.
The Northern Casket Company Building is the best example left in Fond du Lac of a factory from the late 1800s and early 1900s. It shows what industrial buildings looked like back then. It also reminds us of Fond du Lac's past as a busy manufacturing city.
What Was a Casket Factory?
A casket factory is a place where caskets are made. Caskets are special boxes used for burials. The Northern Casket Company made these items for many years. This factory was an important business in Fond du Lac for a long time.
Plans for the Area
Starting in 2018, the city of Fond du Lac began working to improve the area around the old factory. The city wanted to change the land into new homes for people. They worked to get control of the land so they could develop it.
A Major Fire Incident
On June 2, 2020, the Northern Casket Company Building had a very big fire. Local firefighters called it a "major fire." A police officer first saw smoke coming from the building very early in the morning, around 2:45 a.m.
At the time of the fire, the building was empty and not being used. Many fire crews came to put out the flames. Their work was made harder because of a problem with a water pipe nearby.
