Northern Ireland Screen is an important group that helps make movies, cartoons, and TV shows in Northern Ireland. Their main goal is to help the film and TV industry grow and last for a long time. They support many projects and help new talent get started.

How Northern Ireland Screen Started

Northern Ireland Screen began a while ago. It was first called the Northern Ireland Film Council in 1989. Later, in 1997, its name changed to the Northern Ireland Film & Television Commission. This group works to support all kinds of screen projects.

Northern Ireland Screen gets its money from different places. The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure helps fund them. So do Invest Northern Ireland and the UK Film Council. The Arts Council of Northern Ireland also lets Northern Ireland Screen manage money from the Lottery. This money is used to support film projects in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Screen also manages a special fund. This fund is for Irish Language broadcasting. It helps make sure there are more TV shows and programs in the Irish language. These shows are seen on channels like the BBC and TG4.

Cool Projects Northern Ireland Screen Supports

Northern Ireland Screen helps fund many exciting projects. These projects are all about movies and TV in the region. Here are some of the main ones:

  • Belfast Film Festival: A big event where many different films are shown.
  • CineMagic Film Festival: A special film festival just for young people.
  • Foyle Film Festival: Another important film festival held in Northern Ireland.
  • Queen's Film Theatre: A cinema that shows a wide range of films.

Northern Ireland Screen also helped with a project called Unlocking Film Heritage. This project worked to turn old films into digital copies. This way, these old movies can be saved and watched by people today.

The Paint Hall: A Famous Film Studio

"The Paint Hall" is a very old and special building in Titanic Quarter, Belfast. It used to be a huge painting area for ships built by Harland and Wolff. Now, it's a large film studio.

A film producer named Jo Gilbert first turned it into a studio. In 2000, a movie called Puckoon was filmed there. Northern Ireland Screen now manages the building. They plan to let filmmakers use it for free.

The Paint Hall was also used for the 2008 movie City of Ember. Starting in 2010, it became the main studio for the famous HBO fantasy TV series Game of Thrones. That show started in April 2011 and became very popular.
