Northern Ireland Screen is the main organization for film, TV, and animation in Northern Ireland. Its goal is to help these creative industries grow and become strong. They support many different projects, from big movies to local film festivals.

What is Northern Ireland Screen?

Northern Ireland Screen works to make Northern Ireland a great place for making films, TV shows, and animated projects. They help people create new stories and bring them to life on screen. This also helps create jobs and brings money into the area.

How it Started

Northern Ireland Screen began in 1989. It was first called the Northern Ireland Film Council. Later, in 1997, its name changed to the Northern Ireland Film & Television Commission. It then became Northern Ireland Screen.

Who Funds This Work?

This organization gets its money from several places. The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure helps fund it. So does Invest Northern Ireland. The UK Film Council also provided funding in the past. The Arts Council of Northern Ireland lets Northern Ireland Screen manage Lottery money for films.

Northern Ireland Screen also manages a special fund. This is the £12 million Irish Language Broadcast Fund. Its purpose is to help create more TV and radio shows in the Irish language. These shows are broadcast by the BBC and TG4 in Northern Ireland.

Exciting Projects and Places

Northern Ireland Screen helps fund many cool projects. These projects are all about cinema in the region.

Film Festivals and Theatres

They support several popular film festivals. These include the:

  • Belfast Film Festival
  • CineMagic Film Festival
  • Foyle Film Festival

They also support the Queen's Film Theatre. This is a well-known cinema in Belfast. Northern Ireland Screen has also helped with a project called Unlocking Film Heritage. This project works to digitize old films. This way, people can watch them for many years to come.

The Paint Hall Studio

One very special place supported by Northern Ireland Screen is "The Paint Hall." This is a huge, historic building in Titanic Quarter, Belfast. It used to be a large painting hall for the famous Harland and Wolff shipyard.

Now, The Paint Hall is a film studio. It has a massive indoor space perfect for big productions. It was used to film Puckoon in 2000. Northern Ireland Screen offers this space to filmmakers. The Paint Hall was also used for the 2008 movie City of Ember. From 2010, it became the main studio for the popular HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. This show first aired in April 2011.
